Newark, N.J. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) issued the following statement today in response to reports of elevated lead levels found in the drinking water at 30 Newark public schools:

“I was troubled to learn that elevated levels of lead were found in the drinking water at Newark’s schools.

While the state’s Department of Environmental Protection has indicated that the water system poses no health risks to our students, the situation underscores the need for action to fix or replace lead-contaminated water pipes that threaten the city’s safety.
